Senior Chinese Military Officer Meets Australian Guests

Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of the general staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), met Thursday with Brendan O'Loghlin, president of the Australian Defense College and his party.

Xiong said that China and Australia are two important countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Developing mutually beneficial, friendly and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries conforms to the fundamental interests of the two peoples and is also significant in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

He said China is satisfied with the development of military ties between the two countries in recent years, expressing the hope that Australia will continue efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Xiong also briefed the guests on China's economic development, military building, and China's principled position on the Taiwan issue.
