Motorola Signs GSM Contract of US$258 Million with China UnicomMotorola Inc. has clinched a contract worth US$258 million with China Unicom to expand GSM networks in seven areas, the company's Network Solutions Sector announced Wednesday.It's Motorola's second contract with China Unicom to expand GSM network during one month, adding up to US$448 million with the first contract. After the expansion completed at the end of this year, the GSM network capacity of China Unicom will be increased with 3.5 million users. In addition to the GSM 900 network expansion, Motorola -- the first and also the largest GSM network provider for China Unicom -- will help the company to construct a GSM 1800 network. The GSM 1800 network can accommodate 800,000 users, which is the first GSM 1800 network of China Unicom. According to the contracts, Motorola will help China Unicom to expand GSM 900 networks in five provinces -- Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shanxi and Xinjiang., as well in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Motorola's market-leading Horizonmacro GSM solution, adopted in the network expansion, features macrocellular coverage from transceivers that are link-balanced for optimum performance with small size and easy expansion capability.
