China Provides Encephalitis Vaccines to Nepal

China has provided 500,000 pieces of vaccines to Nepal to combat the widespread encephalitis, according the Nepali Health Ministry.

Health Minister Ram Baran Yadav said this on Thursday on an inspection visit to the encephalitis-hit districts in southern Nepal.

Yadav said these vaccines had to be inoculated before the outbreak of the disease.

About 100 people have died of encephalitis in Nepal since the monsoon season began in mid-June. Of the deceased, 52 are in southern Terai plain bordering India.

People are infected with encephalitis when bitten by a particular type of gnat, which usually appear during the rainy season and increase in numbers due to poor conditions. The disease claims the lives of hundreds of people in Nepal every year.
