Tuvalu Joins UNThe tiny South Pacific nation of Tuvalu has been formally admitted to the United Nations as its 189th member.Located about 1,000km north of Fiji, Tuvalu is one of the world's smallest countries, covering just 26 square kilometres with a population of about 9,000 people living on nine coral atolls. At a flag-raising ceremony at UN headquarters in New York, Secretary-General Kofi Annan welcomed the organisation's newest member state praising its stability. |
