Project Launched to Protect Hong Kong's Water SourceA project was launched Wednesday in south China's Guangdong Province to protect the Dongjiang River, the major water source for Hong Kong.The Shenzhen reservoir on Dongjiang River provides 80 percent of Hong Kong's fresh water. With the rapid economic development and growing population and urbanization along the river, water pollution has become a pressing issue. The project, sponsored by the China Youth Foundation, is aimed to raise money across China and mobilize the whole of society to support tree planting at the middle and upper reaches of the Dongjiang River. According to sources here, the Guangdong provincial government plans to invest 4.7 billion yuan (566 million U.S. dollars) to build an 80-kilometer-long sealed water transportation pipeline on the upper reaches of the reservoir in the coming three years to improve the water quality in the Shenzhen reservoir. At today's inauguration ceremony, 1.2 million yuan was donated to plant trees along the river. |
