Jiang Zemin Meets Russian President Putin

Chinese President Jiang Zemin met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the United Nations headquarters Wednesday, both emphasizing that the two countries should increase mutual contacts and coordinate in handling important issues.

Both Jiang and Putin said that they have "identical views on many issues" outlined in their speeches delivered at the U.N. Millennium Summit, such as the role of the United Nations, the new international order and the world multi-polarization.

Putin told Jiang that Russia attaches great importance to developing ties with China, and that good-neighborly relations and friendship between the two nations are not only in their own interests but also helpful to the stability in the world.

He also said that the common stand of the two countries on the international arms control and reduction has already produced positive influence, and Russia will continue to coordinate with China.

Putin reiterated Russia's principled stand in opposing Taiwan's attempt to "return to the United Nations."
