Vietnam Welcomes U.S. President's Visit: Spokesman
Vietnam welcomes U.S. President Bill Clinton's visit to the country, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Le Dung said Thursday in Hanoi.
Dung, also vice director of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry's Press and Information Department, made the remarks at a press conference here.
He said: "during the meeting between Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong and U.S. President Bill Clinton besides attending the plenary session of the Millennium Summit, the two presidents exchanged views on bilateral issues and other issues of common concern. Both sides expressed hopes and exchange views on further developing their bilateral relations, meeting interests of the two peoples for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Asia Pacific and the world over."
Luong and Clinton also mentioned the possibility of exchanging reciprocal visits between the two countries even at the highest level, the Vietnamese Spokesman said, noting that U.S. President Clinton has made great efforts in the process of normalizing relations between Vietnam and the United States, and the recently concluded bilateral trade agreement is one of President Bill Clinton's efforts in that direction.
He added that "we are of the view that if President Bill Clinton visits Vietnam he will be welcome."
