Electrical Problems -- Main Causes for Fire Accidents

Liu Ruixiang, director of the Beijing Fire Control Administration, said Thursday 28 percent of fire accidents in the city last year were due to electrical problems.

Liu said old power grids, defects in electrical design, and residents' improper use of electricity have been the main causes for fires. Fire accidents caused by electricity last year numbered over 1,350, and in the first half of this year over 700, or 26.8 percent of the total.

Liu said it is high time to publicize information on the correct use of electricity and to intensify government control in electricity.

Specialists are required to be certified to use electric facilities and machinery involved in construction and decoration. Routine tests will be given on the implementation of related laws and regulations involving the use of electricity and preventing electrical fires.
