Taiwan Can Only Join WTO as China's Separate Customs Territory
China Thursday reiterated its stance that Taiwan can join the World Trade Organization (WTO) only as a separate customs territory of China.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi told a press conference that the Chinese government has held a consistent and clear-cut stance on Taiwan's entry into the WTO, adding that "We oppose Taiwan authorities' attempts to create 'two Chinas' or 'one China, one Taiwan' in multilateral and bilateral areas by taking advantage of WTO."
He said that all parties should adhere to the principles of the 1992 presidential statement of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the former body of the WTO.
"We hope that the United States will continue to observe the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and the three-no commitment on the related issue," he said.
