Garlic Smuggling Soars in Guangzhou
Guangzhou Customs have recently seen a high frequency of illegal garlic exports, as itintercepted 400 tons of container garlic smuggling in two major cases in August.
Panyu Customs, a subsidiary of Guangzhou Customs, foiled the smuggling attempts on August 24 and 26. Smugglers of the two boats, named Yuntong and Huishi, were caught loading garlic into containers destined for Hong Kong, without valid export documents.
Customs police said that licence management has been imposed for export-oriented garlic. The smugglers evaded the export management for a bigger profit margin.
The period from August to December is the big season for garlic smuggling. The customs police have vowed to fight the illegal exporting of garlic to protect the order of the normal trade.
China's Exit-Entry Inspection and Quarantine Bureau is currently seeking effective ways to benefit the country's exports of garlic. Foreign customs authorities often use strict animal and plant quarantines as a technical barrier in trade to block imports of the China-made farm produce.
Earlier last month the garlic trade dispute between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) brought increased attention to China's garlic exports. According to an agreement, ROK will import 32,000 tons of Chinese garlic with low tariffs this year.
