Karamay High-Efficiency Ecological Agriculture Project LaunchedKaramay City of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region recently launched the project of high efficiency ecological agriculture.According to the deputy mayor of Karamay, Lin Xiangyou, the diversified economy and sustainable development of this city have long been restricted by its single industrial structure and resources. Additionally, although the proven reserves of the Karamay Oilfield can be mined for 100 year according to forecast, the petroleum resources are limited and will dry up in the end. On the basis of this understanding, Karamay has taken advanced action to mark out an area of over 2-million-mu (1 hectare = 15 mu) for the high-efficiency ecological agriculture development zone which is scheduled to be completed by 2015 as a new economic growth point and substitute industry. It's reported that within the over 9,500 square km administrative area of Karamay, about 7.96 million mu of land of trees and grass suitable for agriculture haven't been exploited over a long period of time because of lack of water. With the support of the State and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Karamay has spent three years on completing the water-diversion project which can transfer 400 million cubic meters of water to Karamay each year. Lin said that during the first stage of the project, 500,000 mu of land will be exploited and aquaculture with high-quality beef cattle as the lead will be developed to push forward the integrated development of industries of plantation, feed and processing industries. He also said that a modern agriculture standard and an all-directional (internal and external) open operation would be introduced and advanced technology, capital and outstanding talents would be brought in to build the Karamay project into a first-rate demonstration agriculture zone in China.
