Beijing Destroys 300 Mini-Buses to Curb Traffic AccidentsA total of 300 discarded mini-buses, regarded as a serious traffic hazard in the Chinese capital, were sent to the scrap heap Wednesday in Beijing.Mini-buses has become somewhat of a permanent fixture on Beijing roads since the late 1980s. However, accidents caused by these buses have increased in recent years, due to a combination of poor drivers and poor vehicles. Beijing has 3,800 mini-buses owned by 33 enterprises. Although the number of mini-buses only accounts for 0.26 percent of automobiles in the city, violation of traffic regulations by mini-buses makes up 2.5 percent of the total. Ma Zhenchuan, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, said today's destruction of these mini-buses demonstrates Beijing's determination to better improve traffic on the capital's roads. Ma said during the first half of the year, mini-buses received 49,000 fines for violating traffic regulations. It is imperative and urgent to solve the safety problems of mini-buses in Beijing, Ma stressed. |
