Supply, Marketing Cooperative Important for Rural Economy

China's supply and marketing cooperative system is a vital part of the rural economy and should play an important role in the country's rural reform and development, Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday.

Addressing the third national congress of the system, he said supply and marketing cooperatives should contribute more to the rural economic growth since they have formed a comprehensive business network across the country China.

China's supply and marketing cooperative system is a major channel for rural commodities distribution, helping farmers sell their products and providing farmers necessary materials for production.

Official statistics show that the system has members from 180 million rural families and has nearly 30,000 grass-root organizations all over country.

Wen, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed that the system should first turn losses into profits so as to better serve farmers and the rural economy.
