Chinese Handicapped Artists Leave for US Tour

The China Disabled People's Performing Arts Troupe left here today for their two-week performance tour in the United States.

Deng Pufang, chairman of the China Disabled Persons Federation (CDPF) and head of the troupe, left Beijing Tuesday, together with Sang Lan, a former gymnast and a handicapped member of the troupe.Sang became paralyzed in a training session during the Fourth Goodwill Games in the United States in 1998.

The troupe is to present a performance of music and dance titled "My Dream" in Washington D.C., New York City, San Francisco, Boise, Provo and Hawaii from September 6-27, according to CDPF sources.

The performance tour is sponsored by the CDPF and three American partners -- the CASI Foundation, the John F. Kennedy Center of Performing Arts, and Carnegie Hall.

The performance is aimed at helping American audience gain a better understanding of China today, promote China-US friendship, and show the achievements of China's reforms and social progress, the sources said.

According to the sources, the 14-year-old troupe has visited almost 30 foreign countries.
