International Health Congress Closed in BeijingThe Ninth International Congress of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) closed Wednesday.An action plan will be issued for improving public health worldwide, with the goal of helping ordinary communities to achieve "Health for All" in the 21st century, said Margaret Hilson, president of the WFPHA, at the closing ceremony. More than 1,300 experts from 40 countries and regions attended the five-day congress, which carried the theme of "Challenges for Public Health at the Dawn of the 21st Century." The participants called on public health leaders throughout the world to consolidate efforts for the common cause of social justice and to advance the goal of Health for All in the next 20 years. The experts also reviewed the achievements in public health over the past century and discussed public health problems including the environment, tobacco control, AIDS prevention, oral health, and psychological health in the 21st century. The federation presented an award to Chinese public health experts who have made great contributions to the control of polio. Sponsored by the WFPHA and hosted by the China Preventive Medicine Association, the congress included 17 conferences on special subjects, nine seminars and 48 other conferences.
