Bribery Case of Fuyang Ex-Mayor and Wife Tried
The Hefei City Intermediate People's Court Wednesday opened a hearing on the bribery case of Fuyang City's former mayor and his wife in this capital of Anhui Province, east China.
Xiao Zuoxin, 55, former mayor of Fuyang City, was charged with taking bribes and receiving large amounts of property, and 51-year-old Zhou Jimei, his wife, for corruption and illegal transfer of land-use rights.
The Hefei City People's Procuratorate discovered during the initial investigation that the couple took bribes totaling 1.18 million yuan (about 141,600 U.S. dollars), 2,000 U.S. dollars, and 50,000 Hong Kong dollars.
At the same time, the couple could not tell the source of the 13 million yuan, 14,000 U.S. dollars, and 83,000 Hong Kong dollars in their hands, according to prosecutors.
