Chinese President Assured of Ukrainian Support on Taiwan Issue

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma assured his Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin Tuesday of his country's support for China's drive to reunify the country on the basis of the One China principle.

The two presidents, who are here for the U.N. Millennium Summit held from Wednesday till Friday, met in Waldorf Hotel in downtown New York City.

Kuchma told Jiang that his country has stuck to the One China policy and had no official relations in any form with Taiwan, which he described as an inalienable part of China's territory.

He expressed the belief that a successful resolution of the Taiwan issue would benefit stability in Asia and peace in the world.

President Jiang said he was grateful to Kuchma for his position on the issue.

It was the second time the two presidents met since 1994, when Kuchma visited China two years after the two countries had established diplomatic relations. The two leaders expressed their wish for better ties between the two countries despite the distance that separates them.
