HK's External Trade Up in JulyThe value of re-exports of goods of Hong Kong increased by 11.1 percent in July 2000 over a year earlier to 118.2 billion HK dollars (15.2 billion U.S. dollars), and that of domestic exports of goods increased marginally by 0.1 percent to 16.3 billion HK dollars (2.1 billion U.S. dollars).Meanwhile, the value of imports of goods rose by 11.6 percent to 142.5 billion HK dollars (18.3 billion U.S. dollars), according to the Census and Statistics Department Tuesday. Comparing July 2000 with July 1999, the value of re-exports of goods to all main destinations registered increases of various magnitudes. The Republic of Korea, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan rose by 27.1 percent, 16.8 percent, and 16.3 percent, respectively. The value of re-exports of all principal commodity divisions rose in July. Notable increases were registered for electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts, and so on. Increases were also recorded in the value of domestic exports of goods to Taiwan, Singapore, Canada and the United States. However, decreases were recorded in the value of domestic exports of goods to France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany and the Chinese mainland. Comparing July 2000 with July 1999, increases were recorded in the value of imports of goods from Thailand, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea.
