Beijing Mayor Willing to Develop Ties with Japanese Capital

The mayor of Beijing said Tuesday that the capital of China is willing to develop friendly ties with the capital of Japan, Tokyo.

Mayor Liu Qi made the remark while meeting a delegation of the "Chunichi Shimbun", led by Shirai Bungo, president of the Japanese newspaper.

The city of Beijing has maintained friendly ties with the Japanese capital for over 20 years, though there have been some up and downs. "We believe the majority of Tokyo residents want friendly relations between the two cities," the mayor said.

The municipal government of Beijing also hopes to continue developing the friendly ties, he said.

The mayor informed the visitors of the city's bid for Olympiad 2008 and the development of the Zhongguancun Hi-tech Zone.

The Japanese delegation has been in the city to attend an academic workshop on urban problems in Beijing and Tokyo, sponsored by the Japanese paper and the Beijing Daily.
