Mainland Adheres to One-China Principle: OfficialThe mainland maintains that there is only one China in the world and both the mainland and Taiwan belong to the same China. And China's sovereignty and territorial integrity are inalienable. These remarks were made Tuesday by Zhang Mingqing, the spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, while explaining the mainland's constant and clear stance on the one-China principle, at the first news conference held by the office. He said the key issue concerning the current cross-Straits relations is to adhere to the one-China principle or to separate Taiwan from China. So far, the leader of Taiwan Authorities has not accepted the one-China principle and is still denying and avoiding the consensus of "the two banks of the straits are both adhered to the one-China principle" which was reached in 1992 between the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, of the mainland, and the Straits Exchange Foundation, of Taiwan. The spokesman noted that the leader of Taiwan Authorities has recently said that "reunification is not the only choice" and that "Taiwan is a country of independent sovereignty". The spokesman said the substance of such remarks is to adhere to the separatist avocation of "Taiwan independence", which is "very dangerous" and "should aroused the vigilance of the whole Chinese people, including the Taiwan compatriots." "We will continue to hear what he says and to see what he does," the spokesman said. Zhang went on to emphasize that the mainland is still adhered to its basic principle of "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems", as well as the Eight Proposals raised by President Jiang Zemin in January 1995 on the current development of the cross-Straits ties and pushing forward the peaceful reunification of the motherland. "We maintain that the two sides should start to hold talks and negotiations under the one-China principle as early as possible," Zhang said. The mainland is willing to increase contacts with different Taiwan-based parties, groups and individuals who adhere to the one-China principle and in favor of developing the cross-Straits relations, he said. The mainland will try efforts to strengthen cross-Straits economic exchanges and cooperation, he said. According to the spokesman, in the first half of this year, the indirect cross-Straits trade topped 14 billion US dollars, up 36.4 percent compared with the same period of last year, with Taiwan's imports at 11.6 billion US dollars, up 30.8 percent. Meanwhile, the mainland approved 1,399 Taiwan-funded projects, up 13.65 percent, and received 1,378,000 visitors from Taiwan.
