Chinese FM Spokesman on UN Millennium Summit

China Tuesday expressed the hope that the world leaders will reach agreement on strengthening the role of the United Nations in international affairs at the forthcoming UN Millennium Summit, so as to promote global peace and development.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi told a press conference today that as mankind is entering a new millennium, people all over the world are considering where the world is moving, how international relations develop, and how the United Nations can play a greater role.

Therefore, leaders of all countries are gathering at the UN Millennium Summit to discuss these strategic issues, Sun said. "The exchange of views is very important and at an opportune time."

The Millennium Summit, the biggest gathering of heads of state or government in the history of the United Nations, is to be held at the United Nations headquarters from September 6 to 8.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin left Beijing Monday afternoon to attend the event.
