PLA Chief of General Staff Meets Trinidad and Tobago Guest
Fu Quanyou, chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), met Tuesday with the Minister of National Security of Trinidad and Tobago, Joseph Theodore.
Fu, who is also a member of the Central Military Commission, noted that Theodore's visit to China marks the first high-level trip by the military forces of Trinidad and Tobago since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1974.
The meeting between senior military leaders of the two countries at the dawn of the new century is of vital importance, Fu said.
He said that bilateral relations, including military exchanges, have resulted in new development in various areas through concerted efforts from both sides.
Fu hopes the military relationship between the two countries will continue to enjoy a stable and healthy development in the future.
The Chinese military leader briefed the guest on China's diplomatic and national defence policies as well as the country's army building.
On the Taiwan issue, Fu said that the key to a solution of the issue is whether the new leader in Taiwan accepts the "one-China" principle, stressing that anyone there trying to carry out activities aimed at "Taiwan independence" will come nowhere.
The basic principle of the Chinese government to solve the Taiwan issue remains to be "peaceful reunification, one country and two systems", Fu said. However, "We can not promise to give up the use of force."
Theodore said that he is happy to share experiences with his Chinese military leaders on army building. He reiterated that the Trinidad and Tobago government sticks to the "one-China" principle and supports China's reunification.
Theodore said that he highly appreciates China's principle that all countries, big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, should be equal.
