International Yak Symposium Opens in LhasaThe Third International Symposium on Yaks opened Monday in Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China, attracting over 200 Chinese and overseas experts.Scholars from a dozen of countries and regions have presented more than 120 academic papers on the breeding, nutrition, and treatment of diseases of yaks. Business and cooperation talks will also be held during the six-day symposium to promote the yak industry in Tibet. Tibet, one of China's five major pastoral areas, is home to four million yaks or 30 percent of China's total yak pollution. Meat, dairy and woolen products from yaks are important resources for the Tibetan economy. However, research on the eco-system of yaks and exploitation of yak resources are still insufficient, said Jia Bao, a vice-chairman of the regional government. Denis Hoffmann, a representative from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, said the symposium will promote the research of yaks, the protection of relevant resources protection, tourism and the development of yak products.
