Chinese, Trinidad and Tobago Ministers Hold Talks
Chinese Defence Minister Chi Haotian and Minister of National Security of Trinidad and Tobago Joseph Theodore held talks Monday.
Theodore's visit to China is the first high-level military visit of Trinidad and Tobago to China since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1974.
Chi, who is also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said he believes the friendly cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries will score new development in the coming century.
China is satisfied with the smooth exchange and cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago and is willing to further develop the cooperation relations between the two armed forces, Chi said.
On the Taiwan issue, Chi said the Chinese government maintains the "peaceful reunification, one country and two systems" principle to solve the issue.
He stressed that the Chinese government is fully sincere in seeking for a peaceful reunification and has also made necessary preparations to stop any activities aimed at separating Taiwan from the motherland.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army are fully prepared to safeguard the territorial integrity of the motherland, Chi said.
Chi thanked the Trinidad and Tobago government for its adherence to the "one-China" policy.
He briefed the guest on China's defence and diplomatic policies, and the military building.
Theodore said he is glad to have the opportunity to visit China.He told Chi that the purpose of his China tour is to understand more about China and to strengthen the friendly cooperation with China.
He stressed that Trinidad and Tobago will stick to the "one-China" policy and oppose any activity aimed at separating Taiwan from the Chinese territory.
Prior to the talks, Chi held a welcome ceremony for Theodore.
Theodore arrived in Beijing on Sunday for an official goodwill visit to China at the invitation of Chi.
