Suspected Police Murderer Arrested

A suspected murderer who shot dead two policemen was arrested Monday night in neighboring Hebei Province, a spokesman for the Beijing Public Security Bureau said today.

Han Xuegong, 33, a former bank employee in Botou City of Hebei Province, was found gambling in Fengtai District, southwestern Beijing, on the evening of September 1 by patrolling police.

Han shot at the policemen when they were questioning him. Policemen Ma Fuliang, 27, and Zhou Wenli, 21, were killed, while Policeman Zhao Jingshan, 20, was wounded.

During the investigation, the police discovered that Han had been suspected of stealing guns. Han and his girlfriend Xu Zhenzhen, the suspected accomplice, were arrested in Shijiazhuang, capital city of Hebei Province last night.

The police seized Han's gun in Fangshan District, in Beijing's southwestern outskirts, in the wee hours this morning.

The case is under further investigation.

According to police sources, more than 5,000 police died on duty during the last two decades, with another 100,000 wounded.

In 1999 alone, 533 policemen died and 5,885 were wounded on duty.
