Rock Paintings Make Debut for Visitors

A gallery of rock paintings at Mount Helan in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was opened to visitors Sunday.

And an international symposium on rock paintings was also held, attracting more than 130 Chinese and foreign scholars.

Experts say that the tens of thousands of rock paintings carved by nomads in northern China some 2,000 years ago at Mount Helan are of great historic, artistic and scientific value, and Ningxia will become a center of world rock painting research.

However, the tourist value of the rock paintings has long been neglected. In order to better protect the paintings and attract more visitors, Ningxia established an administration committee for the rock paintings and built a new road leading up to the mountain.

Ningxia is also planning to set up a World Rock Painting Museum at Mount Helan.
