Serious Flooding Hits Xigaze in Tibet

Rainstorms since late August in the southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region have caused heavy flooding in the Nyangqu River, affecting Xigaze City, and two counties, Gyangze and Bainang.

Water in the Nyangqu River rose and exceeded the warning level on August 28. Over 120-meter breach along the dike in the Bainang county inundated over 333 hectares of farmland in the county, and over 600 families were affected.

Houses, crops and highway sections in Xigaze City and Gyangze County were also hit by flooding.

Dorji, vice-chairman of the autonomous region, has led a working team to the Xigaze City. Nearly 2,000 automobiles have been used to transport relief materials, and nearly 10,000 army men sent to repair the damaged dikes and fight the flooding.

Xigaze is a major grain producer in Tibet.
