Anti-Fascist War Anniversary ObservedPeople from all walks of life in Nanjing Saturday attended a discussion marking the 55th anniversary of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Invaders (1937-1945) and the International Anti-Fascist War.On the same day in 1945, a representative of the Japanese Government signed a letter of surrender, symbolizing the final victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Invaders and of the anti-Fascist war. During a six-week massacre after they entered into Nanjing, the Japanese troops killed 300,000 innocent Chinese people. Many participants of the discussion held that this was the cruelest atrocity committed by Japanese soldiers in the Asia-Pacific region. After the war, a handful of Japanese still insist upon glorifying their militarism. In recent years, some right-wing forces in Japan paid homage to Japanese soldiers that died during the conflict at the Yasukuni Shrine, a bastion of the wartime government-sponsored shintoism and symbol of militarism in Japan before and during the World War Two. They also have modified textbooks containing this period of history and held anti-China rallies. "We should bear in mind the history and prevent the recurrence of this tragedy. We should speed up the process of modernization of China and contribute more to world peace and stability," said a participant attending the discussion.
