China's Top Legislator Begins Visit to Iceland

China's top legislator Li Peng arrived in Reykjavik Saturday morning for a four-day official visit to Iceland.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, began the visit after attending the millennium conference of parliamentary leaders at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Acting Speaker of Parliament of Iceland Gudmundur Arni Stefansson greeted Li at the airport.

Li said in a written speech distributed at the airport that his current visit to Iceland aims to increase mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Icelandic leaders, and to develop a long-term cooperative friendly relations with Iceland in the 21st century.

He said he is expecting to exchange views with leaders of Iceland on the development of bilateral ties and other international and regional issues of mutual interest.

Li is scheduled to meet with Icelandic president and Prime Minister later in the day.
