Typhoon Maria Lands in South China

Tropical storm Maria, the 13th typhoon this year, landed between Huizhou and Shanwei in south China's Guangdong Province early Friday morning.

Maria edged northwestward at an hourly speed between 14-16 kilometers. A fresh gale force wind was reported in the center of the typhoon.

The typhoon also influenced rainstorms and strong winds were recorded in the southeastern part of Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta last night and eight counties this morning.

The Guangdong provincial government has issued a state of emergency, urging all related cities and counties to take preventive measures and closely watch major rivers and reservoirs.
