WFPHA International Congress Opens in BeijingThe Ninth International Congress of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) opened Saturday in Beijing.More than 1,300 participants from 40 countries and regions attended the five-day congress, which carries the theme of "Challenges for Public Health at the Dawn of the 21st Century." Participants will review the achievements in public health over the past century and discuss public health problems including the environment, tobacco control, AIDS prevention, oral and psychological health in the 21st century. Wang Ke'an, president of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM) called on all the participants to do their best to improve the health of the whole world. The past achievements made in controling smallpox, measles, poliomyelitis and in family planning, have contributed to people's good health and will show the way to the future successes, said Mohammed N. Akhter, executive director of the American Public Health Association. Sponsored by WFPHA, hosted by CAPM and the China Preventive Medicine association, the congress includes 17 conferences on special subjects, nine seminars and 48 other conferences.
