Eight Companies Bid for Mobile Phone Licenses in Macao

Eight companies in Macao, Hong Kong and Singapore have submitted application forms to compete for new licenses for mobile phone business in Macao, the Macao Daily News reported Saturday.

The competition is a key move to open the local telecommunications market. Government officials said the application is encouraging and it shows that mobile phone services attract investors very much.

The telecommunications authorities will examine the applications and issue licenses to qualified competitors in mid-October. Official sources said three licenses may be issued at most.

At the end of June this year, there were 140,000 mobile phone users in Macao with a population of 430,000. At present, the Macao Telecommunications Company (CTM) dominates local mobile phone services.
