Eleven Missing in Shipwreck on Upper Reaches of Yangtze River

Local rescue staff confirmed that 11 are missing in Thursday's shipwreck on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

On the way down the river, the individually-owned barge, the Longsheng from Zhongxian County in southwestern Chongqing Municipality, capsized in the Qutang Gorge in Fengjie County at 14:45 Thursday. All the cargo and all the people aboard, including nine crew members, three cargo owners and two family members, fell overboard.

Only one owner and two crew members have been rescued so far, according to the rescue team.

Initial investigation suggests that overloading and steering into choppy waters were the most likely causes for the accident.
