Macao SAR to Issue New Stamps on Tricycles

The Postal Services of China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government will on Friday issue a set of new stamps featuring the life of tricycle drivers.

Entitled "Ways of Life -- Tricycle Drivers," the set has six stamps, each of which has a face value of 2 patacas (about 25 U.S. cents), Lau Wai Meng, an official with the Postal Services, said at a press conference Thursday.

A total of 750,000 sets of the stamps will be issued. Other postal products include a souvenir sheet, the first-day cover and an introduction paper.

Tricycles used to be the principal means of transport in Macao from the 1950s to the 1970s, when there were hundreds of tricycles in an area of about 10 square kilometers.

Since the 1970s, however, competition from taxis and buses has led to the decline of tricycle service. At present, there are only about 70 tricycles in Macao and the patrons are mainly tourists.
