China Tops Medal Tally as Asian Athletics End

The 13th Asian Track and Field Championships ended here Thursday with China top ping the final medals table with nine golds, 10 silvers and 10 bronzes.

Chinese female runner Wu Qingdong took her second gold medal of the tournaments by winning the 5,000 meters with 15:58.83. She won the 1,500 meters on Wednesday.

Chinese female runners also won the 800 meters and 400 meters hurdles. Li Na won the 800 meters with 2:03.46 and Song Yinglan won the 400 meters hurdles with 57.73.

Sri Lanka female runner Darsha Damayanthi also won her second gold medal Thursday by winning the 200 meters with 22.84 seconds. She won the 400 meters on Wednesday.

Iran grabbed its first gold at the championships thanks to men's 800 meters athlete Mehdi Jeloodar Zadeh. He won the event with 1:49.80.

Oman and Syria also grabbed their first medal at the championships. Syrian athlete Zaherfal Den Najem won the men's 400 meters huddles bronze and Mohammed al Hooti of Oman took third place in the men's 200 meters final.

With no Asian record shattered in the championships, athletes from China, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Saudi Arabia broke seven championships records and Japanese athlete Takayo Kondo equalled the women's pole vault Asian championships record.

The venue of the 14th Asian Track and Field Championships will be decided during the Asian Amateur Athletic Association Congress here on Friday. The congress also will elect new president of the association.
