Book Copyright Trade Reaches 25,000 Items

It is learned from China Book Copyright Achievements Exhibition which was opened on August 30 that in the past 10 years since the "Copyright Law of People's Republic of China" was promulgated, over 250,000 copyrights have been traded through publishing houses nationwide, 20,000 of which were imported and 5,000 exported. In 1999, the number of copyrights China brought in increased by 7 times greater than that of 1991.

In fact, some publishing houses such as the Commercial Press and People's Literature Publishing House have always been in copyright trade cooperation with foreign publishing houses. In September 1990 the "Copyright Law of People's Republic of China" was published which marked a breakthrough in legal system construction of China's copyright protection. In October 1992, China became a member state of "Bern Convention" and the "World Copyright Convention", thus creating a favorable legal environment for copyright trade between China and foreign countries in a wider scope. The "China Book Copyrights Achievements Exhibition", sponsored jointly by the State Press and Publication Administration and the State Copyright Office, aims, on the one hand, to show the achievements gained in China's book copyright trade over the past 10 years and; on the other hand, to provide the publishing houses with opportunities for viewing and exchanges. Some 197 publishing houses from 27 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities displayed 4,460 titles of sample books for copyright trade which represented the general level of China's book copyright trade .
