Build-up to National Census Underway

China will hold its fifth census, the largest to be undertaken anywhere in the world, on November 1 this year, and build-up to the census is underway.

A nationwide campaign, including teaching school students knowledge of the census and China's population problems, started Friday to prepare for the census.

The campaign will mobilize all forms of mass media, especially national television and radio stations and newspapers, to spread information in preparation for the upcoming census, according to today's Chinadaily.

The census will formally register children that have been born in violation of family planning policies and help China's policy makers modify and add the finishing touches to medium an long-term development plans.

But this does not mean the country is to desert its family planning policy, according to sources from the Fifth National Census Office under the State Council.

More than 5 million census officials an civil servants are to work on the census. The central government has allocated 500 million yuan to the preparation work for the census, and more money will be allocated to ensure that the census goes smoothly.
