Shanghai Pudong Airport Begins Formal Operation

The first phase of the Shanghai Pudong International Airport passed the State-level appraisal Thursday and began formal operations.

The airport handled 27,800 take-offs and landings, 2.47 million passenger arrivals and departures and 97,600 tons of cargo during its trial operation from October 1, 1999 to July 31 this year. It is now designed to handle 20 million passenger arrivals and departures, 750,000 tons of cargo and 126,000 airplane take-offs and landings a year.

So far 29 Chinese and foreign airlines have opened passebger and cargo flights at the Pudong Airport.
