East China Port to Build Key Navigational Lane

Lianyungang, a major port in east China's Jiangsu Province, is to build a two-way navigational channel which allows ships of 70,000 deadweight to pass in all weather conditions.

As an important port linking Asia and Europe, Lianyungang has an annual handling capacity of 20 million tons, according to a port official, but its current channels can not accommodate big freighters.

The two current channels of the port are a one-way channel for ships of 35,000 to 50,000 dwt and a two-way channel for vessels of 25,000 dwt.

According to port officials, a two-way channel for 50,000-dwt ships is under construction.
