Chengdu-Kunming Railway Electrified

Electric locomotives will be running on the Chengdu-Kunming railway in southwest China beginning September 30 as workers completed the electrification of the whole on Wednesday.

According to an official with the Ministry of Railways, the upgraded railway will allow a highest speed of 85 kilometers per hour on mountainous areas and its transport ability will double.

This has been proved in a one-year trial operation in two sections of the railway, he added.

The electrification of the 30-year-old Chengdu-Kunming railway began eight years ago at a cost of four billion yuan, the official said.

The 1,100-kilometer-long railway starts at Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, and ends at Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province.
