Shanghai Mayor Meets Taiwan Visitors

Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi met Thursday with a delegation of the People First Party from Taiwan headed by Liu Sung-fan.

During the meeting, Xu informed the delegation about Shanghai's achievements in economic and social development over the past years, hoping that there would be more exchanges and cooperation between Shanghai and Taiwan.

He said that Shanghai has witnessed a rapid and healthy economic development over the past eight years and the economy has kept growing at a double-digit rate.

Shanghai's development will increase even more with China entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the country 's execution of the strategy of developing the vast western area, Xu added.

The mayor said Taiwan business people have sponsored many cooperation projects in Shanghai in areas like education, science, technology, culture and trade sectors.

The realization of direct mail service, trade, and air and shipping services between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits is the general trend and is in the best interests of Taiwan compatriots and Taiwan business people, Xu added.
