CPONP Opens At U.N. Headquarters

The Conference of Presiding Officers of National Parliaments opened Wednesday afternoon at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York with 156 participants from 142 countries around the world.

The aims of the Conference are to express support for international cooperation and to enshrine a commitment at the highest level by parliaments to working much more closely with the U.N. system and other major international negotiating fora both nationally and globally through their world organization, the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, will deliver a speech at the opening ceremony of the conference expounding on China's stance on international cooperation.
