Tight Security to Begin at All Olympic VenuesTight security will begin from Friday at all Olympic venues with the date being declared "Lockdown Day" by Australia's New South Wales state Police Commissioner and Games security chief Peter Ryan Wednesday morning."You will not be allowed in unless you have the appropriate accreditation," Ryan told journalists in Sydney. "It doesn't matter who you are. "No vehicle will be allowed in that hasn't been signed for and fully searched," he said. "Objects that people are carrying will also be searched and examined." Ryan said although the early decision to tightly secure access to Olympic Park, Darling Harbour and other Games precincts had not been taken lightly. "All our efforts are aimed at ensuring a safe, enjoyable Olympic experience for competitors, patrons and spectators," he said. Visiting Olympic-related sites would become something akin to passing through customs at the airport, the commissioner said. "This means (you) will walk through a magnetometer (or metal detector) and have your bags checked," he said. Ryan said more than 1,200 security personnel would be on hand to search for suspicious objects, parcels in the wrong place and anything that might resemble a bomb or booby trap over the next 48 hours. |
