Moon Cakes Have Good Quality: Survey

Results from an examination of China's moon cake producers showed 105 out of 113 samples came up to national quality standards and overall conditions in the industry were good.

The survey, conducted by the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision, covers 78 moon cake producers in 14 provinces, today's China Daily reported.

In the recent tests, most samples showed producers were clean and that their ingredients, such as flour, sugar and eggs, were of good quality.

More checks will be carried out and any moon cake producers not meeting required standards will be punished, the bureau said.

Moon cakes are a traditional Chinese food eaten on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival which falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.

The Guangdong style moon cake is still very popular in China, the survey showed.

The bureau suggested that consumers buy moon cakes made by big companies who produce cakes using new technology and were probably more healthy.

Also, the Ministry of Health released a circular recently ordering local health inspection teams to pay more attention to the food markets leading up to the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day on October 1.
