Li Peng Stresses Three Principles for Parliamentary Summit

China's top legislator Li Peng said Tuesday that China maintains the people of every country should have the right to choose their own way of development.

In his meeting with Lee Man-Sup, speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, Li said that it is one of the three principles China wants to stress at the upcoming Conference of Presiding Officers of National Parliaments, a three-day event to begin at the United Nations on Wednesday.

China also proposes that all countries, regardless of their sizes, should be equal. The sovereignty of each independent country should not be violated and no country should interfere in other's internal affairs under whatever pretext, Li said.

China hopes that all the three principles will be widely acknowledged by participants in the conference, said Li, who, for the first time ever, is to attend the conference as chairman of China's National People's Congress.

Participants in the conference will discuss such topics as strengthening the role of parliaments in international cooperation.

Lee spoke positively of the development of ROK-China relations, and invited Li to visit ROK. Li also invited the ROK speaker to visit China again.
