Migrants from Three Gorges Area Reach Guangdong

A group of 233 migrants from the reservoir area of the Three Gorges water control project, in the middle reaches of Yangtze River, arrived in Boluo County, South China's Guangdong Province, on Tuesday.

The migrants, who were warmly welcomed by local residents and officials Tuesday, came from Dachang Township of Wushan County, Chongqing. They are the first of the 606 migrants Guangdong will receive this year.

China will relocate 125,000 people living in the reservoir area in the forthcoming nine years, 70,000 of whom will be sent to 11 regions in coastal provinces including Shanghai, Guangdong and Shandong.

In accordance with the plan of the central government, Guangdong Province alone will receive 7,000 migrants from the reservoir area of the Three Gorges Dam.

Zhang Siping, deputy secretary-general of Guangdong Provincial Government, said at the welcoming ceremony that Guangdong is obliged to offer a helping hand to the migrants and to help them settle down quickly in their new homes.

According to local sources, every migratory household is allotted an apartment flat with living space exceeding 20 sq m per capita, a stretch of land, as well as daily necessities such as home appliances, furniture, cooking utensils, food grain for a month, and seasonings.

China has so far resettled 230,000 people to pave way for the construction of the Three Gorges water control project since it began in 1993. The relocation project will involve 1.13 million people in 20 counties and prefectures by the time of its completion in 2009.
