Army Buys Medical Equipment Thru Bidding

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) recently bought 160 million yuan worth of medical equipment through inviting 29 domestic and international bidders.

It has been the largest government procurement ever done in China's medical sector, according to army sources.

In April 1999, the health department of the PLA General Logistics Department adopted a unified procurement of medical tools within the armed forces.

Last year, the army purchased 145 pieces of medical equipment, valued at 120 million yuan, with savings of saving hitting 15.2 million yuan.

This May, the health department sponsored an international medical equipment exhibition which was attended by hundreds of local and overseas manufacturers. Over 60 army hospitals bought 166 pieces of equipment and saved 36 million yuan.

The adoption of government procurement has helped curb illegal activities in the purchasing of medical equipment for the army, sources noted.
