Chinese Port City to Spend Heavily on Transportation

Ningbo, a major port city in east China's Zhejiang Province, will spend more than 20 billion yuan (about 2.4 billion US dollars) on transportation over the next five years.

The money will mainly be used for eight key projects, including the upgrading of the local airport, digging of a canal, and the construction of four expressways.

Li Kuiming, director of the Ningbo Transportation Commission, said that both domestic and overseas investors are encouraged to take part in the program.

According to Li, these projects are only part of the city's endeavor to modernize its transportation sector and turn itself into a transportation hub in the Yangtze River delta.

Over the past five years, the city has invested 10 billion yuan (about 1.2 billion US dollars) in building berths, railways and highways.
