China Surveys Oil and Gas Resources in Yellow SeaGuangzhou Oceanic Geological Surveying Bureau of south China's Guangdong Province has sent a vessel into the Yellow Sea to start a new round of investigations into oil and gas resources in the region.Various new technologies will be used in the surveys, said a spokesman with the team. With an area of 400,000 sq km, the Yellow Sea begins from the estuary of Yalu River in the north and ends at the northern bank of the Yangtze River Estuary. The depth of the sea water is less than 60 meters. Speaking from a geological point of view, the Yellow Sea has favorable oil- and gas-bearing prospects. However, no positive results have ever been reported. China launched its first surveys on oil and gas in the Yellow Sea in late 1960 and also carried out prospecting into two places in the sea in cooperation with foreign partners in the 1980s. Application of new technologies and advanced equipment nowadays would make things different, said the spokesman, adding that they hoped to achieve a breakthrough before 2005 to promote commercial prospecting in Yellow Sea. |
