Beijing Holds Economic Forum on Modernization

The two-day Beijing Economic Forum 2000 started Monday, focusing on how to realize modernization in the Chinese capital.

Fan Yuanmou, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of Beijing Municipal People's Congress, said economists both at home and abroad, well-known businessmen, representatives from various industries and government officials gathered in the nation's capital to make suggestions and recommendations for Beijing's tenth five-year plan and the city's development strategy to 2010.

There were eight topics set today for seminars and they were: means and policies for modernization, Zhongguancun IT area development, Beijing's challenges and opportunities after China's entry into the World Trade Organization, West China's development and Beijing, real estate market prices and policies, non-public economic development and south Beijing's reconstruction.

The forum is set as an annual activity, with scholars and businessmen invited to discuss key issues in Beijing's economic development.
